I am crazy
excited to be among 9 other fabulous bloggers throwing down our favorite
barbecue techniques. Today I’m showing off my sassy Homemade BBQ Beer Sauce,
and let me tell you, it’s nothing short of Lip-Smackin’!
And seriously, my guy puts BBQ sauce on everything! I really mean e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g. You’d think he’d get sick of it by now but with all the varieties out there… I guess the opportunities are endless to him. As such, we always seem to be down to the last couple drops.
With our
dwindling stash in mind, I took matters into my own hands and experimented with
making our own Beer barbecue sauce. Armed with the beau and the MIL as the official
taste testers, the Budweiser BBQ sauce taste as motivation and the contents of
our cupboard, I set out into some uncharted territories (for me anyway). Ok maybe it wasn’t so scary when I found Life Food and Beer’s recipe
as a base.
So as a good little experimental cook, I altered it giving it my own little twist:

Homemade Beer BBQ Sauce
Recipe yield: about 2 3/4 cups
Ingredients:
- 1 cup Ketchup
- 1 1/4 cup Beer (we had miller lite on hand)
- 1/4 cup Brown Sugar
- 1/4 cup Apple Cider Vinegar
- 1/4 cup Onion, chopped
- 1/8 cup Honey (feel free to rough measure)
- 1 tablespoon + 1/4 teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce
Directions:
- Combine all ingredients.
- Heat on medium-low or 250°F in an electric skillet, constantly stirring for 35 minutes.
- Let cool for 2-3 minutes, then transfer the sauce to the blender. Blend until desired consistency (we like ours pretty smooth).
- Using a funnel, pour into a *sterilized bottle (we reused a glass Ketchup bottle).
*be sure to properly sterilize your bottle to
avoid cross-contamination. Simply fully submerge the glass and cap into room
temperature water, then let boil for approx. 5 minutes.
The original
recipe from Life Food and
Beer called for molasses and since we generally don’t carry it in our cupboard
I substituted (less) honey with great results. I also played with the
quantities *cough more beer cough* to taste. #badtothebone
To say beau
approved is an understatement. He pretty much demanded (very unlike him) 3
bottles on-hand at all times. And the MIL- well the look on her face said it
all. She was impressed. I even asked at least three separate occasions just to
be sure.
We’ve added
this sweet yet malty barbecue sauce
on everything from Meatballs, to Sloppy Joes, to Mini-Smokies, to Grilled Chicken.
We’ve even substituted it in our BBQ
Chicken Pizza. Yumm!
I had so
much fun experimenting in the kitchen and I know you’ll just LOVE this recipe!
If you try it, or even add your own flair, I’d love to hear alllll about it!
