5 Red, White, and Blue Patriotic Tablescape

If there’s one holiday that gets me all choked up, it’s Memorial Day, ok I lied… Independence Day and Veteran’s Day have been known to turn me into a crying baby too. The three holidays that remember those who fought the tough battles, for our freedoms. To me Memorial Day is a two-face holiday to celebrate those lives and what they accomplished but also to mourn those lives that we have lost much too soon. That is why every year our family takes a few moments to say a little prayer and talk about those we have lost. We gather around a table with aromatic foods (most likely cooked on our freshly-cleaned-for-the-season-grill) and enjoy each other’s company.

This year we’re spoiling our guests around a beautifully decorated red, white, and blue themed tablescape:

If you prefer more of a simple tablescape, I’ve gocha covered at the end.

Let’s begin with the Left side of the table, shall we?

The foundation of the table begins with that white quatrefoil tablecloth (from Bed, Bath and Beyond), the subtleness of the pattern really allows for a variety of possibilities. On each side of the table, there are these adorable cow creamers (from Kohl's) one in red and one in white. I think they add a little silliness to an otherwise somewhat-serious table. As far as practicality is concerned, since there’s two of them, one could be filled with creamer and the other could be filled with a thinned gravy, a sassy sauce, or even a homemade dressing.

Moving onto the right side of the tablescape:

I just can't get over how adorable the cow creamers are!!

Directly behind the cow, you will see a navy blue pitcher with a wicker-ish handle (not shown here but in other views) nestled inside a large red stripy salad bowl, both from TJ Maxx, to give a modern take on the pitcher basin look. You can see another version of the modern pitcher basin look on my post over at The Happier Homemaker's site tomorrow. How perfect would that pitcher be if it were filled with some ice cold homemade strawberry lemonade with a couple slices of strawberries and lemons floating on top?!

Starting from the left side and working right you will notice a set of three red cruet glass bottles with stoppers (from Walmart) which act as vases to the gorgeous white floral stems (from Hobby Lobby) that remind me of  fireworks. #longestsentenceever

Directly to the right of that is this tall dark blue vase that had me at hello. Seriously, I spotted it down the aisle while strolling through TJ Maxx and half-sprinted blindly throwing it into the cart without even look at the price tag (extremely unusual for me)!! I think it adds the perfect height to set the stage.

To the right of that is a Ceramic Pierced Lantern that also had me at hello. I kid you not, I probably resembled Gollum and his precious. There’s something about that Swiss pattern that just draws me in. Add a tall skinny candle in there during the evening and it’ll cast some stellar shadows. Call me obsessed.

And finally, in front of the vases there is yet another vase/lantern. This one brings more red to the scene and has more of a celtic-ceramic vibe to it. I think this piece does a really good job at breaking up the height, width, and bringing a little more consistency-- giving a slight nod to the square element in the plates.

Alright, moving on. Can we just take a second and enjoy this eye candy:

And then I’ll hit ya with the red tablesetting:

I knew my tablesetting couldn’t go without at least one DIY element. So I whipped up those simple DIY placemats (tutorial coming in June) which brought in the traditional USA colors mixed with important words that have deep meaning during holiday season. The white napkins wrapped elegantly around the silverware. I’m sure it’s far from the proper way of doing things but it looks pretty, no?! I must say, who ever invented the art of folding napkins, bless their soul but I could never keep up. I tried a few variations- which ended up looking like a toddler after having a hissy fit or Jim Carrey’s goose origami.

The red and white plates alternate around the table in a randomized pattern. The Navy Blue almost corduroy textured napkins took turns being wrapped around the white plate. My favorite combination was the navy blue placemat paired with the red dinner plate and white dessert plate. All the plates were topped with these adorable Navy, White and Teal Aztec-ish dip bowls filled with faux strawberries (scored at a thrift store for $0.75).

All that’s missing in the tablesetting were the blue ornate tumblers from TJ Maxx (you’ll notice in a few of the full table views above). Alright so you know how I'm obsessed with glass, right?! Well since this setting was intended for outdoors, for some reason I could let the plates slide. But for some reason I prefer plastic cups outdoors. Weird, I know but I figured guests could walk around the yard with their drinks whereas the dinner and dinner plates would be stationary. Either way, it’s hardly noticeable that they’re not glass until you pick them up.

Phew, so many words for such a small part of the table?!

Enough of my wordiness (for now):

I think the whole table comes together well with a mix of textures, holiday colors, and height variation. Let me tell ya, I had a ridiculous fear of over-styling, under-styling, reds not matching reds, and even a fear of texture. But I assure you, if I can do it, so can you.

Which brings me to the less-is-more red white and blue table setting:

By stripping away some of the pieces you can make the table shine with a less-is-more vibe. Added bonus: there’s so much room for activities!! (Name that movie!)

I left the white cow and the three red vases then added a little squiggly plate I scored at TJ Maxx years ago.

I hope you’ve found inspiration to host your own patriotic holiday party with these tablescapes. Or maybe I've enabled you to get out there and shop for a few new pieces to add to your collection?! (you're welcome!)

All that’s left is to get your barbeque on and make sure to avoid that white tablecloth! Heck it was just there for to cover up our transparent tables (makes for bad photography), so take it off or better yet use NAVY!

Do you cry like a little baby during Patriotic holidays? I’ve spent all this time creating a tablescape that I hardly know what to serve my guests… any ideas?!

P.S. We were not paid or perked from any of these vendors; I just happily picked out pretty red, white, and blue pieces to celebrate in style.

Are you ready for another Red, White, and Blue tablescape?! Be sure to stop by The Happier Homemaker tomorrow (by clicking the image below). And don’t forget to stop back in June for a tutorial on those simple placemats!

  1. Your tablescape rocks! As I've mentioned before, I SUCK at holiday decorating and pretty much ignore every holiday that isn't Christmas. But I love the way you did the red, white, and blue theme, and those little cow pitchers are so fun!

    P.S. Step Brothers? :)

  5. I love your tabletop Trisha! I've got to admit, table top decorations scare me. But, I think that's because I put too much at the table! Including people! More is more! Except when it's not. Great job!
