This year the beau and I are joining our friends for a New Year’s Eve weekend (er weekday?) getaway- so sadly we won’t be putting these bad boys to use. However, for those of you brave enough to host a party- I created a pretty snazzy geometric-style invitation just for you. And guess what?! I’m even giving it away as a free Silhouette (SVG) file, for those of you lucky enough to have a Silhouette Cameo/Portrait or scored one for Christmas (you good girl/guy you!!).

Remember...

7 Black and White (with a Dash of Red) Simple Holiday Tablescape

Continuing with our Black and White Obsessed (with a dash of red) theme, we put together a tablescape for a dinner party with our close friends. But before we get into the goods, promise you won’t judge us on our yucky-in-desperate-need-of-refinishing-floors mmk? Oh and the beaus “college” table... one of these days I’ll convince him to replace it with my matching and more appropriately sized kitchen table.

My favorite part of dressing up a table is finding fun objects around the house and throwing them together in an appetizing way. Our table is no exception:
Black and White with a Dash of Red Simple Holiday Tablescape

Everything we used for this get-up were things we already had on hand. To me, there’s just something about breathing life into some hoarded hidden away dishes and creatively using our every-day dinnerware. It gets me all giddy-excited to have some fun and play around. In this case it was particularly amusing to experiment with varying heights, adding and removing pieces-- until coming up with our fun little masterpiece.

50 Green and Red Velvet Holiday Trifle

Every year we challenged with what dish to pass at our holiday gatherings. We’re always striving for beauty AND slightly festive. Our little Red and Green Velvet Holiday Trifle concoction fit the bill completely. It’s ridiculously easy and was such a hit. The best part is that friends and family are STILL talking about it (a year later)!!

We made two batches for Christmas Eve and Christmas day family gatherings the evening before the 24th. We are blessed to have two trifle bowls one regular and one with a lid (from pampered chef). I must say, the lidded one was more convenient than trying to wrangle plastic wrap and rubber bands.

10 Black and White Christmas Tree (with a Dash of Red)

Black and White Christmas Tree (with a Dash of Red)

As briefly mentioned on Friday, we had a recent passing in the family that has put us a little out of the holiday spirit this year. Sure we helped the beaus mom put up her tree this year, but in our own home-- well we had plans. Big plans, including chopping down this sadly wrongly-placed pine-ish tree on our lot but then it got cold. And it snowed.
Black and White Obsessions Christmas Tree from our lot
We also figured-- we’re not hosting anyone or any parties this year, so maybe we’ll pass this time around. Who knows its December 16th, we still have time right?!

So instead of being all bah hum-bug-ish let’s travel back in time, to last year.  It was our very first real tree, on our first Christmas in our new home…

Did you notice that cute little penguin wreath holder on the door?! I had to dig for that bad boy- he was on the bottom shelf way in the corner on clearance for $2.50. If you squint real hard, you may be able to see his cute little mitten hands. Oh and that wreath, it was a Michael's end of the end Christmas clearance. He actually had an adorable 3 foot Santa in the center with a charger underneath, and was supposed to be used as a centerpiece. They looked far better apart. Originally $100 marked down to $15. Cheah, draw dropping steal if you ask me.

Guess you could say it's my Christmas hoarding secret- end of season clearance.

14 How to Throw a Last Minute Party, Part 5: The Story

Welcome back to the final installment of “How to Throw a Last Minute Party.” This fantidlyastic series is all about how I, a severe procrastinator, pulled together a Simpsons Themed party for my beau (he’s a huge fan) in just over a week. Of course I can't take all the credit, I had some friends and family to assist. Today I’ll be spilling the beans about the story of how it all went down.

You’ve already heard about the planning side of things, so I thought it’d be entertaining to recall how difficult it was to keep the party a secret. And of course, gushing about the beau’s reaction to his ‘main gift.’ There may have been a few beau guilt trips involved. So hang on tight folks because here we goo….

Oh and it shouldn’t go unnoticed that I am simply the worst poker-faced liar. Seriously, ask me to tell you that the grass is purple, I promise it won’t be pretty.

10 Punny Yet Quirky Luggage Tags

Back in September when the holidays weren’t so in-yo-face, well maybe some Halloween pinterest oogling, a few ladies from the Silhouette Challenge Facebook group (you know the one I’ve been desperately trying to keep up with) came up with a spectacular idea. Coming off the heels of their wildly-successful Silhouette Stash-Buster Swap (check out this post for how one of the swaps went down), they organized a Holiday Gift Tag Exchange. It was an event of epic proportions where 30+ extremely creative ladies came together and created their own vision of holiday gift tags so we could spread the craftiness cheer this Holiday Season.

If you follow me on Instagram, (if not you totally should, there’s sneak peeks galore!) then you already knew that back in October, something was a-cookin’:

Whoa whoa whoa, let’s back up a little bit.

Traditionally, my gift tags seem to be rather bland… more often than not I grabbed a pack of store bought tags slapped on some tape and called it good. I knew it was high time to give our gifts a little pizazz this holiday season.

4 How to Throw a Last Minute Party, Part 5: The Gift

Hello again, and thanks for tuning into the next installment of “How to throw a last minute party.” It's a fantidlyastic series about how this procrastinator pulled together a Simpsons Themed party for my beau (he’s a huge fan) in just over a week. Today I’ll be spilling my guts about the beau’s main gift.

Main gift, say whaaat?! Yep, the beau was a bit spoiled this year as he was given two gifts. One of which acted as sort ofridiculously-awesome decoy gift. It will come full circle once you read ‘the story,’ --currently in the works as we speak. And the other gift was his surprise birthday party. Both gifts were meant to be the perfect mix of sentimental and mind-blowingly awesome-ness. You know, for putting up with me all year round.

If you’re just tuning in, feel free to follow through the entire series (on the bottom of this post).

41 How to Throw a Last Minute Party, Part 4: Food and Decorations

Welcome back to “How to throw a last minute party,” if you’ve missed it we’ve already talked about choosing a location and theme, DIY'in invitations, and using a pretty budget/spreadsheet. Today we’ll be talking food and decorations that were thrown together, with the help of my darling family, for the beaus surprise Simpsons Themed Party.

For us, since we-- as in the MIL and myself-- chose a restaurant venue, we simply looked at their catering menu and chose food based on our estimated guests, budget, and, well, my tummy. We started off with a larger “wishful thinking” list with full intentions of narrowing it down. That’s where the budgeting spreadsheet came in handy, keeping track of totals. I know many of your kinda glaze over when it comes to spreadsheets/budgets and technical stuff but pretty pictures and auto formulas are motivating, no?! Ok call me weird.

14 Blogger’s Furry Families- Around the Blogosphere No. 3 + Two Announcements!

Konnichiwa, my friends, Happy Friday! That super fun word to pronounce is actually Japanese for Hello. Whenever I hear/say it, I’m always reminded of this Karmin song. What better way to celebrate “fun” by playing along with Around the Blogosphere

This neat little series showcases fun topics from the most creative blog friends (or co-workers if you will) I know. Today's theme is Blogger’s Furry Families er pets so get ready for some collective AWE’s…

26 Silhouette Cameo Tutorial: Dual Sided Business Cards

*These particular business cards and the proceeding Silhouette Cameo Tutorial are geared toward the DIY’er at heart, bloggers, and other creative businesses out there. They’re also meant to help take the guesswork out of printing double sided business cards.

For those of you wondering what the hole punch and "isn't that convenient" blurb are... well, let's just call those little buggers marketing bonuses. You see, at blogging conferences many of us tend to gather A LOT of business cards (sort of like trading cards) which can get rather messy. So we hole punch all the cards and put collect them on a binder ring.

Back in the beginning of July while prepping early for the Haven Conference (a DIY blogger convention), I found myself putting the finishing touches on a new set of revamped business cards. Pleasantly surprised that the procrastinator in me had left for the day… I was ready to give them the little extra oomph they deserved. Taking what I learned from my second set business cards for the Maiedae Mixer- like don’t print your own business cards unless you have access to a super amazing professional quality printer- it was time to stream line their design to match the new blog design formulating in the back of my head.

26 Not a Fan of Your Current Fan? Redo It! from the Fearless DIYer Mandy

I’d like to extend a big welcome to Mandy from The Unhinged Home. She has this ridiculous ability to bring new life to ordinary things like these Nautical Flags made from MDF. I’m happy to have her here at Black and White Obsession. Today, she’s here to share how to update an old fan.

Enough of my blabbering, on with the show…

Hello Back and White Obsession readers! I’m Mandy from The Unhinged Home! I blog about all things D.I.Y. around the house and more. I’m excited to share with you guys my ceiling fan redo that I did back in July. The best part? It cost me less than $10 to do!

First of all here are some before shots:

Notice the the oak? I’m not a fan of oak (get it fan?.... the post is about a fan? Clever isn’t it... no?). If you like oak wood then good for you, I just find it super 90’s? I feel old saying that like the 90’s is bygone era, but it is. So this fan and your beanie baby collection need to move on.

2 Radio Silent

Alright friends, I admit I went radio silent last week on the blog. What can I say, things got overly busy and outta control. I was hoping to make up for it over on Instagram. If you didn't catch the crazy week, here's a little recap...

It all started with a goal to fix some errors on this lil 'ol blog, which morphed into adding a new page:

Go ahead check out the new Link Party Page. You know you wanna.

Sure the page probably took longer than it should have *cough 10 hours cough* but when inspiration strikes... you MUST take advantage of it. Maybe I should have been focusing my efforts on, you know, actually getting paid for this little gig.

6 What I wore- Fantastic Fridays: Week 30

Wow the days are flying around here and soon enough we’ll have our first blanket of snow here in the North. Today’s Friday, which means it’s time for the next installment of What I Wore this Fantastic Friday

If you’re unfamiliar with this series, check out a few of the early posts (more links at the bottom of this post).

42 How to Throw a Last Minute Party, Part 3: Budget and Checklist (Freebie)

Moving right along with the "How to Throw a Last Minute Party" theme, let's talk about money, Benjamin's, dollas, dough-- fine... a budget.

Even if you're planning your party last minute, it's essential to have a rough idea on how much you plan to spend. I love spreadsheets as much as the next but all the ones I've come across were boring, plain, and not ascetically pleasing. So bringing some glam and bling was right up my alley.

47 How to Throw a Last Minute Party, Part 2: DIY 3D Invitations using Silhouette Cameo

As promised, I'm back with the tutorial on how to create magical 3D invitations using my Silhouette Cameo. Which also happens to be a continuation of tips and tricks when throwing a last minute party:

On Monday, I shared the vision and finished Homer Simpson Invitation:

What I didn't show you was the jipped toned down digital version I presented to our Facebook friends:
Side note: privacy blurring is so ugly, and I didn't bombard guests with my logo- just sayin'.
I may be biased but those 2D invitations got nothing on the 3D beauties. However, that digital version was used for the foundation of the entire project.

38 The Silhouette Challenge: Birthday Invitations Homer Simpson Style

Up next on the procrastinators guide to planning a party is the vision for the invitations. In order for guests to actually show up, it is proper etiquette to give them adequate notice of your party. Since it was only a week and a half away, the invitations were high on the list of priorities.
A little prequel my friends:

My girl Lauren from The Thinking Closet (whom I had the privilege of meeting at Haven this year) hosts a Monthly Silhouette Challenge. She's been inviting me since August and I haven't gotten the nerve to bust out my Silhouette Cameo and jump on the bandwagon to this great challenge. Sure I've used the machine before plenty but to actually post among some pretty talented ladies- queue the nerves.
Until now.

0 How to Throw a Last Minute Party, Part 1: The Location and Theme

The beau's big milestone birthday was coming up and since a good girlfriend couldn't/shouldn't/wouldn't let this one slip by un-noticed-- I began planning his surprise birthday a week and a half before his actual birthday. Cheah talk about procrastination. But c'mon the BEST ideas are formulated from that kinda pressure, am-I-right?

You may recall last Friday; I introduced what's in the hopper this week: how to plan a last minute party, procrastinator's style.
Before getting into specific details for your party it's best to have a rough idea of the basic essentials for a party:
  • Helpers- who can/should/will help you pull off your last minute party
  • Budget
  • Guest count
  • Guest needs (handicap, allergies, etc)
  • Time: start/end of party
  • Theme
  • Decorations
  • Entertainment
  • Food/drinks and who is financially responsible
  • To Do List, which is incorporated into the budget in part 3

12 DIY Failures: Around the Blogosphere No. 2

Welcome back to Around the Blogosphere where some of the most spectacular tutorials are showcased from the most creative blog friends (or co-workers if you will) I know. Today's theme is actually DIY Failures so get your pencils and take notes, my friends, on what NOT to do...

These brave souls showed off a project that didn't quite go as expected and decided to man up and share their misfortunes with the world.
